Reminder Deadline for Breast Cancer Awareness T-Shirts Due Friday, September 3rd.
In honor of breast cancer survivors and in memory of those who have fought and lost the battle, HCFR will be doing a fundraiser to benefit Caring In Our Lifetime, http://www.cureinourlifetime.com/, a local, non-profit organization, dedicated to raising funds and providing financial assistance with medical expenses to men and women in Horry and Georgetown counties affected by breast cancer. We will be wearing pink shirts (while on duty) on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month of October (breast cancer awareness month.) The cost of the t-shirts is $10.00 and $20.00 for polo shirts (with $1-$2 extra for 2XL and 3XL). Deadline to order your shirt(s) is Friday, September 3, 2010.
Additional T-shirts will be available to the public for $15.00.
Horry County Fire Rescue Wins Safety Video Contest
Horry County Fire Rescue was recently awarded a Bullard T-4 Max Thermal Imaging Camera, valued at more than $10,000 for winning a Safety Video Contest, Everyone Goes Home® sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and Fireman's Fund Insurance.
This highly-competitive contest was open to fire departments all over the United States, in which they were to create and submit a video highlighting the importance of at least one of the 16 Life Safety Initiatives. The video submitted by Horry County Fire Rescue demonstrated how a fitness program can be incorporated by utilizing equipment used every day by firefighters, at no cost to the department. The video promoted the following initiatives:
Life Safety Initiative #2- Enhance the personal and organizational accountability for health and safety throughout the fire service.
Life Safety Initiative #6- Develop and implement national medical and physical fitness standards that are equally applicable to all firefighters, based on the duties they are expected to perform.
Team Horry Wins Lexington, KY Regional Championship
Horry County Fire Rescue’s Team Horry (Team 1) showed just what they were made of, winning Lexington’s Regional Championship in the Combat Challenge Relay Division.
2010 South Carolina Combat Challenge Champions, Team Horry (team 1) includes team captain, Michael Medeiros, David Howell, Aaron Windsor, Michael Noreck, Jim Edbrooke. Team 2, Ken Norton, Erin Pravel, Kris Armstrong and Shaun Simpson placed 9th out of the 31 relay teams, as a first time competition team.
In addition, Team Horry (team 1,) posted the second fastest time of the year in the relay division, coming in at a 1:13.
HCFR Boot Drive Raises More Than $9,000
On Saturday and Sunday, August 7-8, 2010, Horry County Fire Rescue held boot drives at local area Wal-Mart locations to support the Coastal South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Horry County Fire Rescue Firefighters Assistance Fund, raising more than $9,000.
Last year, the American Red Cross spent over $51,000, assisting 335 Horry County residents who were affected by fire, with 124 of them being children. In addition, the organization deployed their emergency response vehicle to provide refreshments to Horry County Fire Rescue during major incidents.
“We are very excited about the funds raised at the boot drives,” stated Garry Alderman, fire chief for Horry County Fire Rescue. “The money our firefighters raised, will assist those in our community, in their time of need.”
Also last year, the Horry County Fire Rescue Firefighter Assistance Fund helped eight firefighters with unmet needs, totaling more than $7,000.
Hardwick Road Wildfire
Crews from Horry County Fire Rescue continue to assist the South Carolina Forestry Commission in controlling the wildfire on Hardwick Road that started June 14, 2010 due to a lightening strike.
The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) created the Put It Out campaign to help first responders quit smoking and stay quit. Families, departments, and state associations can also use these resources to inform and help first responders take the first step towards a smoke-free life and support them as they maintain their healthier lifestyle.

Bi-Lo Grocery Store Recognizes HCFR
On Friday, June 18, 2010, Bi-Lo Grocery Store recognized Horry County Fire Rescue for their quick actions at a recent fire at Bi-Lo's Dick Pond Road.
Bi-Lo presented Horry County Fire Rescue with a check for $1,000 to be used for firefighters in need, a pallet of water and a full-tank of gas for one of the engines.
