Your Initial Training
Upon employment with Horry County Fire Rescue, you will be required to participate in assigned training and successfully meet the requirements for each training class. Training includes, but is not limited to, the HCFR 12-week Recruit School. As a new employee you must successfully complete this training; failure to do so will be grounds for dismissal. Also, as a condition of employment, you must successfully complete a 30-day mentor program that includes ride time on a Medic unit and passing a protocol exam.
Training does not stop here. Each Firefighter must obtain at least 240 hours of training each year (20 hours per month) to maintain his/her skills. As well, each employee is required to attend a montly in-service program to maintain his/her medical certification. This learning is required to maintain the ever-changing knowledge of this exciting career.

Retirement
It is mandatory that all eligible full and part time county employees be enrolled as a member with the SC Retirement System.
As a member of the Retirement System, you will contribute 6% of your gross earnings per pay period and your employer will contribute 6.85% into your retirement account. If you are a Police Officer, Detention Officer or Firefighter, you will contribute 6.5% of your gross earnings per pay period and your employer will contribute10.70% to your retirement account.
The retirement eligibility requirements for Police Officer's Retirement is 25 years of service and age 55. Regular retirement is 30 years of service and age 60.
401K
The SC Deferred Compensation Program is a voluntary tax sheltered retirement program available to you. If you decide to establish a 401K account, this will allow you to supplement your retirement or social security benefits. The amount you choose to defer is payroll deductible. You have the option of choosing investments, fixed interest, equities and life insurance. Depending on the plan you select you may have the option to borrow money, tax free, from your account. This is a volunteer program and the county does not match funds.
Life Insurance
Horry County provides life insurance to all employees who work a schedule of 30 or more hours per week. Each employee will be insured for an amount equal to one time your annual salary at no premium cost to the employee. Additional life insurance may be purchased by employees; spouses can be covered for up to 50% of employee's Optional life coverage in increments of $10K up to $100K maximum (medical evidence required for amounts above $20K). Disability insurance, is also County paid, provides partial income protection in the event of non-work-related injury or illness that renders an employee unable to work. Besides the above additional policies you can purchase, the county pays the premiums for the following policies: 1 x Annual Salary through Companion Life which is capped at 50K, a $3,000 Basic Life policy and through the state retirement employees are covered for 1x Annual Salary.
Paid Leave
All regular full-time and part-time employees earn paid leave the month that may be used for vacation, sick, bereavement, personal time, etc., subject to Department Head or his/her designee's approval. Regular part-time employees shall earn paid time off on a pro-rated basis. Earning rates are as follows and apply to all pay cycles.

Holidays
Holidays are to be taken on the prescribed day unless it is necessary for the employee to be at work. An employee classified as non-exempt or exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and who is required to work on an observed holiday shall be paid for the holiday at the employee’s normal, regular rate of pay in addition to pay earned in accordance with the employee’s normal pay cycle.
When an observed holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it shall be observed on the preceding Friday or the following Monday, respectively, by employees working on a Monday through Friday schedule. When an observed holiday falls during a period of Paid leave, that day will not count as a paid leave day. Regular part-time employees who work at least an average of 20 hours per week shall receive a pro-rated amount of holiday time. When an observed holiday falls on a period of unpaid leave, the employee will not receive credit for holidays during the period of unpaid leave. When an observed holiday falls during a period of military leave, the employee shall be paid for the military leave and not receive holiday pay in addition to the normal pay.
Health & Dental Coverage
As a regular Horry County employee there are three medical plans to choose from: The state plan, Companion HMO or CIGNA HMO. Medical care covers a variety of benefits to include prescription drugs. Employees are also covered by the State Dental plan.
Supplemental Long Term Disability
The county pays for one Long Term Disability policy for you. You have the opportunity of purchasing another one. This insurance is designed to provide a financial cushion if you become disabled. Your benefit will be based on a percentage of your pre-disability earnings. This is a customized program for you.
You can apply for this plan if you are a regular, full time employee regularly schedule to work 30 or more hours a week for 12 months.

Employees have the opportunity to choose direct deposit for their paychecks and may join Carolina Trust Credit Union.

An IRS approved plan that allows employees to be reimbursed for health care and/or dependent care expenses with pre-tax dollars.
