The mission of the Public Information Office is to establish and maintain a communications link between the public and Horry County Fire Rescue. This is accomplished through a working relationship with various media sources and through partnerships with both community and business organizations. By using these resources to disseminate information, the public gains a better understanding of our operations and in turn, instills trust and reassurance to the residents and visitors of Horry County.
Radio, television, and newspapers, both locally and across the country, contact the department seeking information about fire and emergency medical services. The Public Information Officer also receives regular inquiries from community organizations, business and industry groups, and governmental agencies regarding community involvement and safety issues. Department liaison for these organizations, including coordination of major community and media events involving department personnel, is also an important function of this office.
Horry County Fire Rescue's Public Information Officer (PIO) responds to newsworthy incidents 24 hours a day and assists Incident Commanders with press information and interviews. By functioning as the news media's incident liaison, the PIO maximizes the flow of information while minimizing the demands placed upon the Incident Commander. The PIO is often able to clarify the department's actions during a major incident or widespread disaster and thus help the media avoid speculation or misinterpretation of Horry County Fire Rescue operations.
